Academic Care Scope and Sequence
Terms 1 and 2.
Semester One is Year 9’s first foray into the senior year of the Middle School. It’s also their first experience with Stage 5 subjects, and with electives. With all this in mind, Year 9 are prepared, in Academic Care, for the challenges of learning at a Stage 5 level. Key skills developed in the first term are thinking skills, study organisation and techniques, and examination technique. Each fortnight Year Meetings take place, where a particular academic or pastoral theme is discussed. In the week following, tutors develop those themes. The first message for 2018 is “YEAR 9-STEP UP”, encouraging everyone to take a more active role on the college community.
Term 3 – Career Voyage
During Term 3 students access the online program Career Voyage. While it is recognised that Year 9 students are generally unsure about career choices, this program is designed to assist students to start thinking about their future. It has a range of components and the students are given suggestions as to possible career paths determined by their likes and dislikes. Career Voyage also has information and help about writing a CV and the different paths to employment available today. Students access this program during Academic Care time and work with their Academic Care Tutor to compete the program.
Term 4 – What Have I Done and Where Am I Going?
Term 4 sees the students work with their Academic Care Tutors to review their Semester 1 exam preparation and results. During Academic Care Conversations students set goals targeting their Semester 2 exams and ways to improve from Semester 1. They spend time reviewing their results from Career Voyage and discuss options for senior schooling and pathways external from school. Throughout the year, Year 9 students are also immersed in a number of pastoral and spiritual experiences, including a 2 day camp, a Pastoral Day and special events in the College’s liturgical calendar.
